Mazarin, Jules

Mazarin, Jules
(1602–61)
   Politician and Cardinal.
Mazarin was born in Piscina, Abruzzi, and he was educated in Rome and in Acalá, Spain. After a military and diplomatic career, he entered the service of the Church. He became a naturalised Frenchman in 1639 and a Cardinal in 1641. In 1642, with the death of Cardinal richelieu, he became chief minister of France. He enjoyed the favour of the King’s mother, Anne of Austria (court rumour had it that they were married), and became all powerful. Among his many achievements was the Peace of Westphalia. He secured the marriage of the young King Louis XIV with Maria Theresa of Spain and, despite civil war and a short period of banishment, he enormously enhanced the prestige of France in Europe. In the religious sphere, he pursued a policy of toleration towards the Huguenots, but he supported Pope Innocent X’s condemnation of Jansenism. He also found the Collège Mazarin, to which he donated his magnificent library.
